Forest Holidays manages three self-catering log cabin sites and more than 20 touring caravan and camping sites throughout the UK on behalf of the Forestry Commission. As part of an ongoing modernisation program, all three cabin sites were completely refurbished in 2003. To reflect this, Forest Holidays invited Moriarti to provide design proposals for a complete update of their Cabins holiday brochure and the corresponding Camping and Caravan brochure. A strong grid layout, complementary typestyles and careful selection of photographic material creates a style that captures the essence of holidays in Forest Holidays’ woodland sites and can be carried into a range of supporting promotional material.

Forest Holidays’ brochures are the primary vehicle for attracting potential holiday-makers to their sites in the UK. Over 50,000 of each of these two brochwures are published and mailed every year in order to help secure holiday bookings. The key requirements of the brief were to promote peaceful and relaxing cabin, caravan and camping holidays in the heart of Britain’s tranquil forests, and to highlight the quality, comfort and accessibility of the modernised cabins. The design solution needed to balance the contemporary with the traditional, while presenting all necessary pricing and booking information in a clear and consistent manner.

Taking on board Forest Holidays’ key objectives, Moriarti developed a design theme and typographic style that provided a fresh, friendly and feel-good approach for each brochure. The strong grid layout used consistently throughout both documents creates a distinctive page style that is easy to navigate, and which maximises the use of supplied photography. The juxtaposition of handwritten headlines with sharp, contemporary typefaces for the text content ensures maximum legibility while retaining an element of individual personality.

To complement the 2004 holiday brochures, Moriarti continued the design theme across a range of supporting marketing materials including site leaflets, posters, promotional postcards and national press advertising.

A new exhibit was planned within the Glenmore Visitor Centre to increase awareness of the Capercaillie population’s current plight. The exhibit would consist of a ‘faux’ observation hide, a touch-screen multimedia application and a giant, wallmounted board game. Moriarti was invited to design and develop the two interactive elements to provide fun, engaging and informative ways of educating visitors of all ages.

An interactive touch-screen ‘Save the Capercaillie‘ game was designed to convey the complexities of managing the Capercaillies’ habitat. Designed as a multiple choice quiz, the objective of the game is to ensure the birds’ survival, with the player’s performance tracked on a population scale. Questions are based on factors that directly affect the Capercaillie population – habitat, weather conditions, tree felling, and so on. The player has a limited time to answer each question, a tail-feather countdown adding excitement along the way. An ‘Ask the Forester’ feature provides clues to the best answers when required. The game is aimed at children between the ages of 10 and 16, but is also enjoyable for younger children with adult assistance.

Managed by the Forestry Commission, Glenmore Forest Park near Aviemore is one of the UK’s most popular outdoor tourist destinations, attracting more that 1 million visitors each year. Its visitor centre aims to create interest in and awareness of the forest park’s native woodlands, habitat and wildlife. The Capercaillie, a bird originally native to Scotland, is once again under threat of extinction. The Forestry Commission, in conjunction with the European Union, is committed to adopting a proactive approach to its conservation.

Capertastic! is a 7’ x 4’ wall-mounted game primarily aimed at younger children, who may or may not be supervised by an adult. The purpose of the game is to encourage responsible behaviour, not just in the Capercaillie habitat but in the countryside in general. Two players compete against each other to see who can complete a walk in the woods quickest while being sensitive to the needs of the Capercaillie and the surrounding environment. Players spin rollers and move giant playing pieces around an innovative magnetic track. Landing on coloured spaces requires players to move back or forward or spin a ‘Chance’ roller that determines further actions. First back to the Visitor Centre wins! The project required the development of innovative technical solutions to ensure the game‘s smooth operation and resistance to wear and tear. With its striking graphic treatment and easy-to-learn gameplay, Capertastic! has proved to be extremely popular with visitors of all ages.

"Moriarti were quickly able to capture and understand our requirements, and turned them into visually engaging solutions that delivered everything we were looking for in our new Capercaillie exhibit. The multimedia ‘Save the Capercaillie’ interactive quiz is exciting, enjoyable and educational, and is an extremely high quality product. The wall-mounted board game is wonderful, offering a fun-based competitive experience that manages to reinforce all the key messages we would like both children and adults to take with them into the outdoors. Moriarti have created two excellent visuallearning solutions that form a major part of the Visitor Centre experience." Anne Baxter, Design and Interpretative Services, Forestry Commission Scotland.
